As Told To: Nancy Hettich
We knew nothing about TOS when we were shown the house we bought in
1989. However, within five minutes we decided to make an offer. Why did non-golfers want a house on the first fairway? We loved the
non-obstructable view, found the neighborhood pleasant and the location
convenient to various facilities we needed (including an international
airport).
As we learned of dues, we began attending Board meetings and soon were
involved in several committees each. Mary served on the Board 2-1/2
terms. We cannot overstate our conviction that attending Board meetings
and particpating in committee work are excellent ways to begin to
understand how the community works and to become acquainted with others
in the neighborhood.
Keith was involved with several committees dealing with finances as
well as the major Policy and Procedures Manual rewrite project. Mary
served on Pool and Membership Committees as well as acting as Board
liaison to a number of other committees.
We used the golf course and tennis courts only to entertain out-of-town
guests, but the pool was a major part of our lives each summer as Mary,
with as she claims, "no speed and no style," enjoyed mile-a-day swims.
We are now in Beaverton, Oregon in a lovely condo facility, near our
daughter Laura and her family, but we cannot ever forget the delightful
friends and neighbors we enjoyed and the interesting activities provided
by Tam o'Shanter.
EDITORIAL NOTE: For the great majority of their years at TOS, Keith and Mary were responsible for the "Lively Lines Folding" project. They gathered volunteers, set up tables, and organized duties of the volunteers each month to assure that every household promptly received the Lively Lines.
